Archaeology Matters

Early success for #archaeologymatters campaign

The Plymouth Archaeology Society recently met with Oliver Colville MP to discuss local heritage issues. They had a very productive meeting and Mr Coleville even showed his commitment to the #archaeologymatters campaign by being photographed with one of the campaign pledge cards. A great start to the campaign and a positive example for us to follow when approaching our own MPs.

The Power of Archaeology campaign aims to get MPs and local Councillors more closely engaged with archaeology and heritage issues, raise the profile of threats posed by cuts and planning policy reform, and make sure that decision-makers understand what archaeology does for us all and why people care passionately about it.

We know that communication between constituents and their MPs is a great way to raise the profile of particular issues. So, as the next stage of the campaign, the Local Heritage Engagement Network (LHEN) have produced pledge cards for supporters to use and distribute. The cards are designed to be filled in by you, your colleagues and friends with a personal message saying why you care about archaeology and heritage, and then invite your MP/Councillor to respond to 'sign the pledge'.

Filling in the card is an easy way to share a personalised message to your government or council  representative. Anyone can fill these cards in: Professionals who work in heritage or archaeology, local group members, or interested individuals. You can mention a specific site or simply express a general concern for the past - all that matters is that you show them people care.

The CBA is also working with partners in the sector (including the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA), the Association of Local Government Archaeological Officers (ALGAO), Rescue, and British Archaeological Jobs and Resources (BAJR) to push this message, and, as always the LHEN toolkitcontains useful information to help you plan a letter or visit to see your MP and give more details about the Power of Archaeology campaign. To get your cards or for more ideas on how you can more effectively lobby your local MP, email LHEN.
